"North Andover and Methuen Embrace Unconventional Timing for Fourth of July Fireworks Celebrations This Year"

In a departure from tradition, North Andover and Methuen are opting for a unique approach by hosting their Fourth of July firework displays on the weekends after the holiday. The decision was prompted by factors related to the firework company responsible for the displays, according to Jeff Coco, Co-Chair of the North Andover Festival Committee.

Typically, North Andover's fireworks take place on July 3, but due to a merger between the firework company they work with and another company, the display is scheduled for July 7 this year. This change is attributed to the prioritization of "high-end displays" by the merged company, with significantly higher costs compared to the budget allotted by North Andover, which usually amounts to around $15,000.

Adding to the challenge is the limited number of licensed technicians authorized to work in Massachusetts. With only 94 technicians available for 351 towns and cities, firework displays across the state are affected. Many technicians have retired or left the business, resulting in a shortage of skilled personnel.

Methuen has also encountered difficulties in the past, having to reschedule their display due to weather and technician availability. However, this year, they intentionally set their date for the weekend after the Fourth, which has proven successful in attendance and has extended their celebration.

North Andover will showcase its fireworks on July 7 at dusk on the Town Common, while Methuen's display will take place on July 8, with festivities beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the fireworks commencing at 9:30 p.m. at the Loop. This alternative schedule aims to provide both communities an extended and vibrant celebration.
