NORTH ANDOVER — North Andover High School made a significant stride in promoting mental health awareness with its first-ever Mental Health Awareness Day. The event, held on Wednesday, welcomed over 25 diverse groups and featured two insightful guest speakers.

The Mental Health Awareness Club, led by club advisor and Spanish teacher Alejandro Saravia, along with adjustment counselor Tom DiStefano Jr., organized and orchestrated the event. Notable participants included local organizations like the North Andover Fire Department and similar clubs from neighboring high schools such as Newburyport High School's Mental Health Awareness Club.

Following the initial program, the event opened its doors to the public from 1-3 p.m. Attendees had the opportunity to explore various booths and attend a faculty presentation delivered by Dr. Dana Ososwiecki.

Mental Health Awareness Day came to fruition thanks to the efforts of Pagiatakis and Miller, who pitched the idea to DiStefano. DiStefano, recognizing the importance of the initiative, wholeheartedly supported their plan. The proposal was then presented to NAHS principal Chet Jackson and other faculty members, who expressed their unwavering support, as confirmed by DiStefano.

The primary goal of the event, according to Pagiatakis, was to raise awareness about mental health issues and ensure that people were well-informed. The engagement and participation of students during the event were encouraging, leaving Saravia optimistic that even if a single student gained knowledge or insight, the event was considered successful. Miller expressed the hope that the event served as a reminder that resources are available for those who may be struggling.

While this was North Andover High School's first Mental Health Awareness Day, DiStefano remains hopeful that it will become an annual tradition, fostering a culture of support and understanding within the school community.
