It’s no secret that winter weather brings snow, rain, and melting snow. Unfortunately, this precipitation can cause flooding if catch basins (stormwater drains) are clogged with debris. The Andover Department of Public Works (DPW) is reminding residents to do their part in helping keep the town’s 7,400 catch basins clear of debris.

How Catch Basins Work

Catch basins (stormwater drains) play an important role in managing water flow during storms and melting snow. In order for them to work properly, they must be free from any debris that can block or reduce the inflow of water. If they become clogged due to leaves, dirt, or other natural materials, it is not possible for them to collect the rainwater or melting snow effectively. This can lead to flooding if enough catch basins are clogged at once.

What Residents Can Do

The Andover Highway Division has been hard at work clearing debris from many of the catch basins around town but residents can help too! If you notice a catch basin in your area that is blocked by debris, please alert the DPW so they can take care of it quickly and efficiently. However, under no circumstances should a resident attempt to remove the grate from a catch basin even if it is clogged - leave it up to the professionals!

It is important for residents to remember that cleaning out catch basins is not only helpful for preventing flooding but also helps preserve our environment by controlling surface runoff and preserving our water quality. As we enter into another winter season with more precipitation on the way, let’s all do our part by helping keep our town’s stormwater drains clear! If you notice any blocked or damaged catch basins in your area please alert your local DPW department so they can take care of it right away! Thank you!
