If you've noticed that your water has been looking a little bit off lately, you're not alone. The Andover Water Division has announced that it will be conducting fire flow testing on Saturday morning, and as a result, some residents in the area may experience water discoloration.

What is Fire Flow Testing?

Fire flow testing is a way to ensure that the hydrant system is working properly and that there is enough water pressure to support firefighting efforts in the event of an emergency. The testing involves opening up hydrants and allowing water to flow for an extended period of time.

While fire flow testing is necessary to ensure public safety, it can sometimes cause water discoloration. This is because when the hydrant is first opened, sediment that has built up in the pipes over time can get stirred up and travel through the system along with the water.

What Should I Do if My Water is Discolored?

If you see discoloration in your water, the Andover Water Division advises running your cold-water faucet and/or outdoor spigot until the water clears. In most cases, this will only take a few minutes.

So next time you notice that your water isn't quite as crystal clear as usual, don't panic! It's probably just a side effect of fire flow testing, and it should clear up in no time. In the meantime, you can help hasten the process by running your cold-water faucet or outdoor spigot until the water runs clear again.
